Honeybee On A Ozark Sundrop Flower

Honeybee On A Ozark Sundrop Flower

Mrsroadrunner Photography Wildlife Nature: Honeybee On A Ozark Sundrop Flower &emdash; honeybee ozark sundrop flower 159

This series of photographs is of a Honeybee working on this Ozark Sundrop Flower!

There was more photographs to this series then I showed here. This Ozark Sundrop (Ozark Sundrop is not the scientific name by the way), is one of several plants of this species we had growing in 2014. This Ozark Sundrop was growing in our driveway! This was not even part of the flower bed, though several species of flowers wanted to grow in this rocky, dry nasty soil so I let them! Who am I to argue with something that wants to live so badly.....

The Ozark Sundrop is in the Primrose family and has a striking yellow bloom that really stand out! Guy and I were speaking of this flower this morning and think we got this four or five years ago from perhaps bird droppings?? We are just not sure how we got this Ozark Sundrop growing here?

In the front in this nasty, rocky soil the Ozark Sundrop grows short like a bush. Somehow (birds?), we got this in the back flower bed in which this Ozark Sundrop grew taller then our six foot dog fence and wide!! Fighting for the sun in the flower bed which the soil is better taken care of. That larger Ozark Sundrop spread rapidly!! I cut the lower branches off, and pulled out the plants that grew from the roots. I also dead headed the blooms that rapidly produced seed pods to control the spread of the Ozark Sundrop in this location.

As you can see from my photographs the honeybee is heavy with yellow, sticky pollen! So much of this yellow sticky pollen that the honeybee at times was under stress when trying to fly. The photograph above shows how much pollen was on this honeybee.

You can see in the photographs how well this Ozark Sundrop flowers! Many pollinators are attracted to this bright yellow flower blooms! Unlike other flower blooms that pollen is light and can be carried by wind, us who have allergies know of this all to well! The Ozark Sundrops pollen just seams to heavy to be carried by the wind...... I dont seam to sneeze like crazy around the Ozark Sundrop blooms anyways....

The Honeybee sure did not feel it had to much pollen on it.... the honeybee kept coming back!

You can in the photographs while the Honeybee is in flight the Honeybee has a bit of this pollen on it.

Then back to the bloom the honeybee goes!

The Honeybee I did watch for a time as well as photographing the Honeybee's behavior. The Honeybee to me appeared to be to heavy to fly..... though I am not a Honeybee so....

The Honeybee kept going back to the Ozark Sundrop flower !

The Honeybee in the above shot flew to another bloom so I figured I had enough photograph of this happening and went on to another happening here in our garden. Our garden can keep me busy for hours just all the activity going on here!

Thank you for coming by and checking out my photographs I take in my part of the High Desert of Oregon, and / or reading my observations I write along with my photography.

Sand Lily Growing in Jefferson County Oregon

Sand Lily Growing in Jefferson County Oregon

Mrsroadrunner Photography: Sand Lily Growing in Jefferson County Oregon &emdash; Sand Lily Leucocrinum 307

Meet the Sand Lily! This beautiful wild flower is just one that blooms here in the High Desert of Oregon, the county of Jefferson County Oregon. Overlooked by many for it blooms as you can see very low to the ground.

Mrsroadrunner Photography: Sand Lily Growing in Jefferson County Oregon &emdash; Sand Lily Leucocrinum 305

We do know of a spot that these do bloom and our quite impressive to see!! The soil one would think nothing but sage brush could grow in! Wrong!

Because our area is such a unique desert, being east of the Cascade Mountains to the west, and the Ochoco Mountains to the east our area is a unique place! To the untrained eye our area may look rather ...... empty. However take the time to look around and you too may just see these Sand Lily as well!

I like to note, this spot also is home to the Pygmy Short-horned Lizard.

Because the Sand Lily blooms on the desert floor I have never even attempted to try and dig one up to bring home. I just do not feel it would survive. Plus both Guy and I agree the tap root could be very deep into the ground, doing more harm then good to try and remove this pretty wildflower.

This is also a edible plant from the Asparagaceae family. However I am not comfortable just reading something and running out to try it. A connection of mine and I spoke on twitter of foods and how I can be "picky", about such things. I do not recommend anyone putting things into their mouth just because you read it......

This wildflower is just extremely pretty and a nice bit of color on the desert floor!! Being from the Valley west of the Cascade Mountains I had not grown up stepping on such things! The Sand Lily also does not grow everywhere, or at all times here in the High Desert. I am hoping to go to this spot in 2015 in April to see if they will be blooming. The way it is going here, hoping to go several times. Early if possible since we are in drought conditions and everything seams to be growing early.

Plus like I said the Pygmy Short-horned Lizard is at this spot and I would like to spend more time with that lizard.

If you do happen to visit us here in Jefferson County Oregon (we are a hour north give or take from Bend Oregon. We are home to Lake Billy Chinook which is known by many people), bring your water and take a walk. Keeping in mind that we may not have large, giant things growing here.... however we have other things growing here that are quite pretty to see like the Sand Lily! Be careful of the Pygmy Short-horned Lizard! The lizard is horribly small and blend right in to their environment! You may think you are looking at a rock until it takes off like a flash!!

Thank you for coming by and checking out my photographs of the Sand Lily that was photographed outside of the city of Madras Oregon growing on the desert floor. Come to think of it, this could have been on the Ochoco National Grasslands ....

Purple Wildflower Bouquet

Photo by MrsRoadRunner . : photography... | Gather

Purple Wildflower Bouquet. These wild flowers grow this way, under the leaves of the plant. You can see where I bent the leaves to get a photo of the flower beneath. The flowers grow within a inch of the ground.
